A 21-year-old male asked:

what is the vagus nerve? can gerd/lpr stimulate it and what symptoms occur if it can?

Dr. Colin Sanner
Neurology 20 years experience
Nerves in the neck: The vagal nerves, 1 on either side of the neck, control the vocal cords; the left vagal nerve also gives parasympathetic innervation to the heart. In theory, gerd shouldn't stimulate the vagal nerves, because the esophagus is further back in the throat, while the vagal nerves are close to the front of the throat.

Dr. Robert Benner
Obstetrics and Gynecology 33 years experience
Yes: Antacids are the first line of therapy, and provide relief in about 50% of women. Unfortunately that leaves half of women with persistent symptoms. Drugs called h-2 blockers are category b, and generally regarded as safe to use. This includes drugs like Pepcid (famotidine) and tagamet. Elevating the head for sleep and being careful about eating late in the evening can reduce symptoms.
