R/O infection: A better description of your neurologic symptoms would help. Generally spinal taps are obtained to r/o infections of the nervous system. In your age group other causes may require an LP such as demyelinating disease, auto-immune mediated epilepsies, and nutritional/metabolic disorders. Other test results from ct scan/mri are used in conjunction with the LP results to provide an answer.
