Post nasal drip: He may have a post nasal drip that is causing his cough. That being the case you should saline nose drops four times daily after you've used a bulb syringe to get rid of mucus, . Take him into the washroom, turn on hot shower and steam 4times daily. Keep vaporizer running. Elevate matress so he is sleeping on an angle g.Ive him an anti histamine which can be given with penicillenpush fluids.

How long?: Don't say how long the cough has been "reli bad" but unlikely to be "tonsil infection". Post nasal drip is possible, likely due to allergies. More likely is bronchospasm/asthma. If not improving w/ inhaler use > 4 times/day, need more aggressive treatment for asthma +/- allergies.
