Pain?: Gum disease typically progresses without pain, unless you develop a severe gum abscess / swelling that also involves the nerve of the tooth / teeth as well (called a combination endo/perio problem). If the tooth can be saved & is not too severely mobile, then you would require root canal treatment. See your dentist asap to determine the cause of your pain and perform appropriate treatment.

Get treated: Pain from periodontal disease may come from an acute infection which may need antibiotics from your dentist. Advancement of gum disease can result in tooth hypersensitivity where as they may ache. Sometimes grinding of teeth contributes to damages to teeth and bone, referring pain from muscles or bruising tooth sockets. Taking of Ibuprofen for pain and inflamation with a tab of tylenol (acetaminophen) every 4h.

NSAIDs: Unfortunately if there is pain from your gum disease, seeing the dentist or periodontist for treatment may be the only way to get complete relief. Until then, over the counter pain relievers like tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen may provide some improvement.

Medicines: Some symptoms will subside with the use of ibuprofen, or an antibiotic, but you would need a dentist for the latter.

OTC pain relievers : In nearly all cases, only acute "gum disease" is painful. Call your dentist for an emergency appointment and explain about your situation. You can possibly have your dentist call the pharmacy and request prescription medicine for you until your appointment or try over the counter pain relievers. The hospital er is a waste as most are not equipped for dental problems. Good luck!
