No help for virus: Cold sores, usually caused by a variety of viruses (most famous among which is the dreaded herpes simplex virus) are unaffected by antibiotics which are designed in the lab to attack the bacterium. Since viruses are not actually cells themselves and instead insert themselves into your body's cells, antibiotics are useless. You should get either a swab or a blood test to determine if indeed hsv.

Cold Sores : No. Cold sores are due to the herpes virus, and do not respond to antibiotics. Several well-advertised otc remedies purport to shorten the bout with a cold sore, and you may find them effective. If this is your first one, you shouldn't be concerned, and the symptoms, although annoying and painful, will clear. If you are prone to heavy break outs, often, you might want to consult with your doctor.
