A member asked:

How many days and what kind of home treatments are enough before seeking medical treatment for constipation is necessary?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Try OTC laxatives...: Constipation is common and usually caused by a benign process such as change in diet, activity, travel, or medications. Try eating more fiber, taking otc fiber supplements (e.g. Metamucil), otc laxatives (e.g. Milk of magnesia, (magnesium hydroxide) miralax) or getting more exercise. If the constipation lasts for more than a few weeks and/or is associated with significant abdominal pain or rectal bleeding see a doctor.
