Many things: Infection. Trauma. Allergy. Various systemic illnesses. Cancer. And others. This is a pretty broad question, so very difficult to answer with any specificity. If you have inflamed lingual tonsils, you should see your dentist or ENT (ears nose throat) physician for an evaluation and discussion to get at the cause.
