Have it looked at: Pain could be as a result of many different things. One would need to do a thorough history and physical exam and possibly some laboratory and radiology exams to determine the exact cause. Causes of pain may include: trauma (fracture, tendon or ligamentous tear, arthritis, tight shoes) infection metabolic conditions (gout) musculoskeletal or biomechanical abnormality.

Shoes could be tight: On occasion you tie your shoes too tight of the shoe presses up against the nerves on top of the feet. This can cause a sudden onset of pain and swelling. Check that out if still persists see a podiatrist use ice for the swelling.

Whenever, I read : "very painful" on here, i would recommend a doctors visit. My first thought was possible gout, but this usually presents on one foot and is usually hot. My second thought was a nerve related condition possibly from your back. Obviously, the info you provided was limited, so my advice is get to a doctor. I hope you feel better.
