Muscle spasms: This is most likely due to muscle spasms in the neck that travel up to the jaw muscles, especially the temporalis muscles on either side of your head that are large muscles that allow you to close your jaw. Keep your neck from extremes of cold especially. If it continues see a dentist about possible TMJ issues and maybe some physical therapy and muscle relaxant medications.

Tension in neck: It sounds like muscle tension in the neck muscles is causing pain- like a charley horse. Try stretching the muscles and massaging your neck firmly. Try to get the knots out. Take some Acetaminophen & Ibuprofen too.
