Usually OK: A single cyst in one or both kidneys is usually not problematic. I am assuming that these have been stable in size over the time period you mentioned. Polycystic kidneys, on the other hand, have many cysts - and can cause kidney failure. Polycystic kidneys tend to run in families, passed from one generation to the next. Nothing to do: Cysts are very common on the kidneys. These increase with age. In the vast majority of cases these cysts are truly "incidental, " which means a radiologist mentions them because they are there, but they are of no clinical significance. Every once in a while a very large cyst can be problematic. Or if the cyst has any worrisome features, it will be worked up. Usually nothing to worry about.
