Usually OK: A single cyst in one or both kidneys is usually not problematic. I am assuming that these have been stable in size over the time period you mentioned. Polycystic kidneys, on the other hand, have many cysts - and can cause kidney failure. Polycystic kidneys tend to run in families, passed from one generation to the next. Talk to your doctor for clarification about your situation. Lgromkomd.

Nothing to do: Cysts are very common on the kidneys. These increase with age. In the vast majority of cases these cysts are truly "incidental, " which means a radiologist mentions them because they are there, but they are of no clinical significance. Every once in a while a very large cyst can be problematic. Or if the cyst has any worrisome features, it will be worked up. Usually nothing to worry about.
