A1c 5.3: If you always have an A1c in or near that level, and you are only taking metformin 500 mg a day you might consider going a few days without metformin and check you blood sugar daily. If your blood sugar is high but your A1c still normal at 5.3, make an early appointment with your doctor and find out where the problem is.
