What does it mean for a baby to be breech?

Version or c-section: If the baby is breech at 38 weeks then you may need to consider having the baby turned if you are interested in having a vaginal delivery. If you do not have a version and the baby is breech when you go into labor then the safest way to delivery the baby is via c-section.

Head up/bottom down : Presentation refers to the position of the baby inside the uterus. Cephalic presentation is when the head is down. Breech is when the head is up and the bottom (breech) is the presenting part.

Sitting position: A baby that is in the sitting position is called a breech. Sometimes the baby will turn before labor, and sometimes your doctor can turn the baby for you (version). Often times the dictor will recommend a cesarean section to minimize risks to the baby, .

Upside down!: Normally, when you get to full term, the head of the baby is down and is the first thing coming through the cervix. If the first part is a foot, leg or bottom, the baby is breech. Breech deliveries have unique concerns, so be sure to talk to your doctor about your options for delivery if your baby is breech. We may also be able to turn the baby while inside of you.
