Sometimes: Biliary sludge is a mixture of particulate matter which has precipitated from bile. It generally consists of cholesterol monohydrate crystals, calcium bilirubinate or other calcium salts.Sludge is almost always an ultrasonographic diagnosis. Prevalence of sludge is relatively low. Complete resolution or progression to gallstones are possible. Sludge formation is probably from gb dysmotility.

It could: Gallbladder sludge is a mixture of bile, mucous and tiny bits of cholesterol-based and calcium-based particles. Without sludge, bile naturally passes through the gallbladder from the liver to the duodenum to ultimately help digest fatty foods. However, sludge can just slosh around in the gallbladder causing gallbladder infections and othe problems.

Yes and no: Sludge is a common finding specially in women or fertile age, overweight and over forty years old. The problem is when symptoms appear. If they do then surgery may be indicated. Good luck on the scan.
