Synthetic B12 added: First, there is one documented vegan source of b12, red star vegetarian support formula nutritional yeast. Re: food-based vegan b12, food-based vitamins are created by adding synthetic vitamins (including b12) to a culture of yeast. The yeast absorb the vitamins & then they are said to be food-based. I know of no evidence that this is superior to just taking synthetic vits but it does cost more!

B12: B12 that is fortified in foods is cultivated in nontoxic bacteria. Otherwise it is normally consumed from eating meat products that obtain B12 from soil or bacteria in their gut.

B12: B12 principally derives from animal sources and eggs. Dairy has little. Select soy can provide some. More vegan foods are being supplemented with B12, as B12 defici, ency is common among vegans. The process of supplementing vegan foods is recent. It is real. Check with your favorite health food store. See www.vegetarian.org.uk/factsheets/b12factsheet.html
