A member asked:

Will a stomach hernia resolve itself? how does part of your stomach wind up above diaphram, and sit beside esophagus?!?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hiatal hernia: Not likely to resolve itself. The diaphragm is a large muscle that has a "hole" in it where the esophagus passes through. Stomach and lungs are constantly moving as you breathe and move. Sometimes a bit of the stomach can get pushed or pulled up above the diaphragm. Oftentimes it will slide up and down and can be seen on a chest xray.
