No: Moderate acid reflux can easily be managed by medication. The hernia that forms at the end of the esophagus is a sliding or paraesophageal hiatal hernia where a portion of the upper stomach and esophagus prolapse into the lower thoracic cage. This can easily be repaired if needed when the hiatal hernia is in danger of becoming constricted or strangulated
