Cut properly: Many times, ingrown toenails are caused by trying to cut down the sides or by cutting too short. If you can't see the nail corners, you cut it too short. If problems persist, get it professionally treated. An infected toe is not a trivial matter and can lead to series problems.

Best to see a doctor: Try soaking in warm soapy water and then use a cuticle stick to push the skin away from the nail. Try to pack a small piece of cotton under the nail edge. Apply antiseptic cream and bandaid.
