Goes away on its own: Strep goes away on its own. Antibiotics are used to reduce the chance of developing rheumatic fever down the road, not to get rid of the strep. So, while strep throat actually doesn't need to be treated with antibiotics for it to go away, there is a theoretical increased risk of developing rheumatic fever (immune system inflames the joints and sometimes the heart) without treatment.
