Depends: This test has a very high false positive rate and is used primarily to rule out the presence of a clot. Just because the d-dimer is elevated does not necessarily mean the patient will have a significant clot. Many factors can contribute to an elevated d-dimer: recent surgery , pregnancy, inflammation and trauma to name a few. If neg, there is a very high probability no clot is present.

Depends: Patient selection is important for this test to be useful. If used inappropriately or indiscriminately, results will have little value.
