D-dimer: A positive d-dimer test can support a concern for pulmonary embolism. It is important to understand the reason for the test in order to understand the result. You should discuss the result with the doctor who ordered the test to put the results in context.

False positives: The d-dimer test is very good at ruling out a blood clot. In other words, if the test is negative then the chance of actually having a clot is extremely low. However, it has a high rate of false positive results. This means additional testing is needed to determine if there really is a clot. These tests are much more specific and accurate. If the ultrasound was negative, then you are probably ok.
