Many possibilities: More info. Is required to give you the most complete answer, but the possibilities include muscle strain/spasm (levator scapula, rhomboid, trapezius), referred pain from the spine (disc herniation, ligament sprain, osteoarthritis), among others. If persistent and not improving with 1-2 weeks of relative rest, over-the-counter analgesics and ice or heat, then see your physician for an evaluation.
