Sharp pains: Sharp, shooting pains are often due to pinched nerves which make the fleeting, jabbing discomfort occur with certain motions of the back. This different than the steady discomfort of a back strain or inflammation. Pinched nerves usually resolve without specific treatment except rest, but,if you can take them, nsaids like ibuprofen often help. See your physician if pains persist or worsen.
