Not unexpected: With the usual gastrointestinal viruses that go around this time of year, vomiting is usually the first symptom, followed by diarrhea as the virus moves down (and out of the) digestive tract. Depending upon the virulence of the virus and the fluids/foods you are feeding your child (limit milk and dairy, exception: yogurt), the duration of the diarrhea would not be unexpected.
