A member asked:

Why does viral gastro sometimes cause vomiting and diarrhoea if those two symptoms don't do anything to get rid of the virus?

They are symptoms: There are viral particles in your emesis and stool, but the virus causes inflammation that lasts for days so you can have vomiting and diarrhea for days. The damage that virus causes lasts longer, sometimes weeks. When virus destroys the absorptive layer of your guts, it can take a while to regenerate, and meanwhile, your food doesn't get digested as well and diarrhea continues.
