You need to get: The nutritional info. Can look up a given food online. Netdiary is a good app that has a lot of this info built in. Fitnesspal is another app, i think. Restaurants sometimes have this info available. Also most foods list calorie per serving on the nutrition label, but watch what it calls a serving size. See photo.
