Completely different: Effexor is directly an antidepressant, and is fda indicated for this disorder & generalized anxiety, etc. Abilify (aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic, but is also sometimes used to augment antidepressant effect. If you have bipolar depression, being on an antidepressant alone is unwise due to possible triggering of hypomania or mania. In manic situations, Abilify (aripiprazole) may be used to contain these symptoms.
