Definitions overlap: A dermatome is an area of skin supplied by sensory neurons that arise from a single spinal nerve ganglion (from a single dorsal root). A peripheral nerve field refers to an area of skin innervated by a single nerve. An area innervated by a single dorsal root is called a dermatome. Both can sense pain and temperature.
