How to stop an autistic adolescent cursing?

Behavior therapy: Chldren with autism vary in terms of severity, so any approach really needs tto be based on a good understanding of your adolescent. Sometimes simple minimal fines or consequneces work such as putting a quarter in a family jar. Rewariding periods of time without cursing with a small token or favorite toy or object they like is a second strategy. One size or approach does not fit all teens.

It depends : First you need to determine if it is part of a tic disorder as that will require a slightly different approach. Once that has been ruled out then you usually would employ behavioral modification techniques. It can be quite tedious and frustrating and utilizing a trained behavioral analyst will help the intervention to be more successful. It is also key for caregivers to model good language.

Follow Dr. Rankin's : Advice; check for tourette syndrome & ask his behavioral therapist or school psychologist to do a functional behavioral assessment & help you devise a "token economy system" for using only nice words. Calmly explain the words that are " not okay." set a period of time to monitor his utterances, after explaining a rule; e.g., that he earns tv/computer time only by using nice words.
