Depends on comfort: The ideal distance to watch a flat screen (or computer screen for that matter) is dependent on the viewers comfort level. The distance may need to be adjusted if one feels eye strain, tiredness or irritation.

It's your choice: There is no ideal viewing distance for everyone; some people prefer to be closer, while others tend to stay further from the screen for comfort. As long as you do not feel strain, whatever distance you prefer should be the starting point. If you cannot find an ideal or practical distance, see an eye doctor to evaluate your eyes for possible options to help you.
