Is it true that computer screens "trick" your eyes into focusing on the wrong distance ? i.e. image is 1 ft away, but eyes focus 2ft away ?

No: The image derives from the pixels on the screen. Your focus must be on the screen for a clear image. You can daydream and focus deeper but the image will blur.
