TMD: Tmd, commonly referred to as tmj, is the reason for the popping. A disc of cartilage is positioned between the lower jaw bone and the skull. As the jaw moves, this cartilage will move in synchrony with it. The "pop" is occurring when there is imperfect synchrony. Unless there are other symptoms, such as pain or the lower jaw locks open or closed or severe headaches, no treatment is usually needed.
