A member asked:

Why would someone need hepatitis b vaccine before hip replacement surgery?

Not specifically: The risk would be from blood transfusion not from the surgery per se and all blood is screened to way minimize the risk. There is no reason not to be vaccinated but the series is 3 shots over 6 months.

Risk: Among other methods of disease transmission, hep b can be passed thru blood. Most hip replacements need blood transfusion, which carry a risk despite all safety precautions.
