Generally no: While the approach to treatment can sometimes differ as a scar ages, there is generally no time limit for treating the appearance of a visible scar. Sometimes however the scar may have other functional effects such as limiting movement of joints, etc. These effects may become permanent over time so that treating the visible scar may not reverse the other effects.

No: Scars mature and can continue to improve for up to a year. They are sun-sensitive and may become hyperpigmented with sun exposure. The best way to treat a scar depends on the scar. Options include silicone gel, silicone sheeting, use of filler (for spot or crater-like scars), laser therapy, hydroquinone, dermabrasion, or kenalog (triamcinolone) injection, or surgical scar revision.
