Keep area dry: The area would be kept clean and easier to fill if the dam is used.

To get a better fill: Some fillings can be done much easier and more predictably using a rubber dam. Saliva can interfere with the bonding process. Using a rubber dam can control saliva contamination and the gingival tissue can be retracted, giving the dentist a clean dry operating field.
