Singing lessons: Hyperventilation should strengthen the diaphragm unless you were consciously just trying to move your rib cage-which is a lot of work and concentration. The diaphragm is a smooth muscle and you have little or no control over it but perhaps a teacher that helps students with breathing techniques (singing) can help.
