A member asked:

My jaw tends to lock sometimes and it's hard for me to open my mouth as big as i used to open it before. why is this? is it because of my braces?

Unlikely: Braces are usually neither the cause or fix for TMJ pain, but if wearing an orthopedic device it is possible. It is more likely that bruxism (grinding, over use) can cause muscle inflammation and swelling or spasms (trismus) and this would be the reason for painful and limited opening. Advil, (ibuprofen) ice, heat, limitation of opening will help and it should abate. Good luck!

TMD: This phenomenon is called tmd and is due to damaged or over-worked temporomandibular joints (joints between your lower jaw and the skull). Previously mild tmds can significantly worsen in late teenage years, especially in females, due to hormonal changes. This worsening in symptoms can coincide with orthodontic treatment bu is not necessarily caused by it.

Probably not: Sounds like the cartelagenous disk in your jaw joint is out of place. Braces don't cause this to happen. Ask your orthodontic specialist to check your tmj.

Likely not: Due to the braces, but you may be developing TMJ issues. Talk to your orthodontist about the issue.
