Depends: A complex thyroid nodule that is bigger than 1 cm in diameter should be biopsied (a simple procedure that can be done under ultrasound in an endocrinologist's office). The sample obtained can generally determine whether the nodule is benign. If so, no further testing is required unless the nodule grows unexpectedly.

Worth checking: If the size of your thyroid is causing you symptoms of compression (pressure, pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing), then i would recommend that you have your thyroid removed. If any nodule is > 1cm then it should be biopsied. The complex cyst should be biopsied if there is any solid component. It may also be drained under ultrasound (us). Otherwise, just observe with yearly us.
