Probably muscles: The tightness is probably muscles, but you need to be sure that all pathology is ruled out first. Check with your dentist or ENT and have them be sure there are no problems. If there is no pathology then address why the muscles are painful. Bite tmj sleep disturbances etc.

See a Demtst and MD: From a dental standpoint, these symptoms are associated with several types of conditions which include life threatening infections to tmj. Best to have an exam by a dentist and physician for a more thorough exam before jumping to any conclusions. I would also recommend that you not put this off for long.
