What does cystic fibrosis do to the pulmonary system on a cellular level?

Mucus & infection: The cells lining the airways don't put out enough water into the airway to make airway secretions thin enough to be coughed out. The mucus that collects clog the airways and let germs grow and thrive instead of being killed. Long-term infection damages the airways and substance of the lung. The airways and lung units gradually fill up with pus and germs and can't take in oxygen or get rid of co2.
