Sodium channel: Cystic fibrosis or CF is a genetic disorder that affects a sodium channel (salt) in the lining of the airways, sinuses and other organs. With this abnormality salt and water leave the lumen (center) of the airways resulting in thickening of secretions and airways congestion/pneumonia and poor function.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetically inherited disorder, and if both parents are carriers, it can be passed on in its more serious form ("homozygous") to offspring. The mild form is usually treatable with mucolytic agents, but serious lung infections and pneumonia are frequent complications. The disease affects the lining cells' oxygen exchange in the pulmonary alveoli.
