5.5-6 wks from LMP: In OB ultrasound, dating is based on menstrual age (beginning with the first day of the mother's last menstrual period) and not the actual date of conception. The heart starts beating during the 3rd week after conception (5 weeks from lmp) and can be seen with a transvaginal scan shortly thereafter. There is some variabilty, but the heartbeat is almost always visible after 6 weeks.
