Not necessarily: Patients with systemic le will almost always have a positive ana. However, patients with lupus confined to the skin, i.e. Discoid le or scle (subacute cutaneous le)may not have a positive ana. A positive ANA by itself does not necessarily indicate sle and is seen in a number of medical conditions. The diagnosis of sle is made on the basis of historical, clinical and laboratory criteria.

Lupus: Typically this requires a positive ANA which can be sent for staining patterns, titer levels and/or specific antibody markers (eg. Anti-dsdna).
