Depends: A fractured patella is frequently treated with surgical fixation. An unstable or dislocating patella can be treated with a brace the first time but may also require surgery with recurrence. Cartilage damage or patella arthritis is usually treated with an exercise program of quad strength and hamstring stretching. Resurfacing is reserved for terrible cases or older patients.
