Bone: The tooth is held in your jaw by bone not gum. The gum protects the bone. If all that is damaged is gum, the gum will heal to a greater or lesser extent. With an injury like the one you have suffered you should be seen by a dentist for further evaluation.

Yes: A "ripped" gum is very rare and usually caused by trauma. What is more usual is the recession of the gum down the root of the tooth. This can look like a severe drop in the gum exposing the root. The exposed root has no bone covering it and the tooth may have significant bone loss. That is what may make the tooth fall out.
