Depends: I cannot see you from where i sit, so advice as to the severity of your problem and the time in treatment are useless. Orthodontics is a great adjunct to your life, it is a decision that you will not regret. As to whether they will help your teeth: unless done by a poor clinician (hopefully rare), it will not only help, it will be a joy!

From wikipedia: Malocclusion: imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed. In other words, fixing your malocclusion is most often done by improving the positions of your teeth. The time required is dependent upon the severity-difficulty and patient cooperation. Make an appointment with an orthodontic specialist to get an opinion for yourself.

Up to you: Can't give you a time estimate without knowing the severity of your malocclusion (bad bite). Average time in braces is approximately 18 months, slightly longer for adults, longer if extractions required, longer if jaw surgery required. The better you follow your orthodontist's instructions (good oral hygiene, avoid damaging foods and habits.), the sooner your braces come off. It's up to you.

Orthodontist: Your orthodontist will be the best one to estimate treatment length for you. And yes, the braces can not only help with your bite but also help straighten individual teeth.
