Not enough info: There are literally hundreds of things that could match the description you gave. There is no way to narrow it down to a few options without a physical examination, a picture or more information.

Eye Exam Needed: First, as you reach 40 yo, you should have a routine eye exam to make sure your eyes are healthy and to look at this red spot. It is difficult to give you solid advice as it depends on where your red spot is. Spots on the white part versus spots on the inner lid, etc are very different. I recommend you see an eye specialist.
