A member asked:

I have kidney stones. should i get a stent in the kidney or shock wave therapy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

You might need both: Shock wave therapy, or lithotripsy, is the primary therapy for large kidney stones that cause symptoms such as pain or recurrent infection. If stones dislodge from the kidney and migrate into the ureter, shock wave therapy is not used. Often after shockwave therapy, a stent is placed to help the passage of the residual particles from the kidney to the bladder and to prevent obstruction.
