Ibuprofen: Taking regularly scheduled Ibuprofen (works better than tylenol (acetaminophen) to decrease swelling) can help. If your throat is really sore to the point of not wanting to eat or drink anything, sometimes doctors can prescribe Prednisone (a steroid) to help with the swelling. Only begin this in consultation with your doctor. Some people find relief with something like lemon-honey tea or the like.

Palliative care: Mononucleosis a viral infection of the epstein-barr virus, & can really cause significant throat and mouth pain (pharyngitis). Advil or tylenol, (acetaminophen) warm salt water rinsing will help treat symptoms. Time is the key, rest and you will get better. You can try "magic mouthwash" a prescription that uses mylanta or antacid to coat area, mixed with possibly topical anesthetic to relieve pain. Best of luck!
