Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Cyst or infection: Many reasons to develop painful lumps in underarm or axilla. Swollen lymph nodes may or may not be painful. Ingrown hairs can be uncomfortable. Cysts are usually non-tender but if large enough or infected, can be quite painful. Hidradenitis suppurativa is an extreme case of oil glands gone bad.
