A member asked:

Will a baby with airways malacia that will apparently grow out of it, have just as strong airways eventually as a child that didn't have issues?!?

Good prognosis: The prognosis is excellent. Most patients outgrow this condition by the time they are aged 3 years; many infants outgrow tracheomalacia before they are aged 1 year. Tracheomalacia after a compressing lesion lasts longer, depending on the length of time of the compression.

Airways: It depends on the severity of his malacia.Occasionally the trachea or larynx may have to reconstructed. Also , children who outgrow malaciamayhave a hoarse voice or they may be more subject to croup with weather changes.

Likely yes: Kids who have congenital laryngotracheomalacia (wow, what a big word!), will indeed have normal airways once they outgrow their condition. Inaffected kids, their airways are jsut more pliable until their support structures, such as the cartilage tracheal rings, develop. Once these structures develop, their airways are every bit as good as any other, non-affected child.
